Bird Beak ExperimentWe did an experiment using different objects as bird beaks and food to see what beaks picked up what foods the best. This led into a discussion regarding bird beak adaptations and how this affects the food they eat.

Today was full of all kinds of exciting events! We are finally getting into the real swing of things and our class has been able to be so productive since routines and procedures are under control! Book BuddiesAnother super successful book buddies meeting! The students are getting to know their partner and are exploring all kinds of texts by reading together! It is amazing how focused these children are with 54 kids in one classroom! Mystery ReaderWe had our first (dog themed) Mystery Reader today and it was a great success! The kids loved hearing the reading of someone else's parent. Thank you Alisa Aczel for stepping up and being our first reader! Native American itemsThanks to these two who remembered to bring in their Native American artifacts! They were also very eloquent when it came to presenting these to our class! Thanks to these two who remembered to bring in their Native American artifacts! They were also very eloquent when it came to presenting these to our class! August Birthday CelebrationWe had all kinds of fun celebrating our August birthdays! Happy Birthday Penny, Kate S, and Travis!
The kids have worked so hard all week on these presentations and they turned out amazing! The children did their own research tying what we have been learning in class to our Unit of Inquiry, specifically the line of inquiry regarding connections between organisms in an ecosystem. Through their poster (using words or just images) they had to answer one question: how did the Native American tribes use their connections with the ecosystem to gather food, clothing, and shelter? They presented this morning and I was super impressed!
Last Friday, we had our first book buddy meeting with Mr. Luke's class! Both classes did an AMAZING job. We had 54 students in one classroom and everyone was still able to hear each other. That is impressive! Students met their first partner and discussed their books by answering a question off of comprehension dice. The kids seemed to have a great time and Mr. Luke and I were so pleased with the discussion that took place. We are looking forward to making this part of our Friday routine! We went out yesterday looking for real world examples of biotic and abiotic things as well as scavengers, producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Here are some videos to check out if you are concerned about math or even just a little confused. We will begin getting math homework this week, I think these will be helpful! You can find a video for every single lesson through the "Eureka Math" Youtube channel. They are geniuses! Lesson 3Lesson 4My apologies!MAP testing has gotten my all out of whack. Sorry I haven't been able to update this as regularly as I should! We have been up to lots of fun stuff! Guidance LessonLast week Ms. Patino came in and introduced herself, told us her purpose, and completed a quick guidance lesson on building classroom community. The kids made fortune tellers (I used to call cootie catchers) about themselves and then shared with their classmates. Words Their WayThis week, we started working on a set of spelling words together to get the hang of spelling expectations. The program we use is called "Words Their Way." The students will be split into 3 - 5 groups This program focuses on word patterns and finding them in authentic literature. More information will be sent out at a later date. Reading Salad
I must say, I'm beat! We had a wonderful week full of organizing, learning routines, building community, and getting the hang of IB. Library Organization and Friday's QuestionWe got to know our library by organizing it by genre and popular authors. We also have a question on the whiteboard to answer each day (I only got a picture of Friday's. Oops!). Some of the answers are so sweet, I can't help but share. How many bears can live in the forest? We completed an activity where students were bears (we even had an injured bear, a blind bear, and a mama bear). The bears had to collect food (slips of paper) and we counted at the end to see if the bears had enough food to survive (80 pounds for 10 days of survival)! Turns out, only 2 of our bears would have made it! We had two very kind bears (shout out to William and Myles) who shared their food with our blind bear. Though we know that wouldn't happen in the wild, it was definitely something I'm thankful happened in our class. See if your child can answer the following question: how did this activity relate to our Unit of Inquiry (Sharing the Planet)? In what ways did this activity represent the structure of the community?
For good measure, here's Penny relaxing this weekend, hope you do the same! See you Monday! |
