What we've been up to...Genius Hour is a brand new concept to me this year, but I must say that I am loving it (and I think the kids are, too!) This is a time for the students to explore their passions and really connect their background knowledge to the real world. Read more about genius hour and the company who started it (GOOGLE!) here:
http://www.geniushour.com/what-is-genius-hour/ We are in full blown creative mode when it comes to our Genius Hour! Students have come up with some pretty fantastic ideas for inventions. As we continue this process, we will be focusing more on pricing, profit, branding, and marketing. As you see ads while you're out and about, please consider asking your children these questions:

Thunder CakeLast week, we reviewed story elements using different fiction books. We looked closely at Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco. One of our parents generously offered to bake some Thunder Cake and bring it in! The recipe calls for tomatoes and we were all interested to see how it would taste. The general consensus was that the cake was delicious!
Here are some exciting things that have been going on at F.AVE! Raffle winners! We had THREE winners from our Library Trivia Question Raffle yesterday! Congrats! Inquiry into MeasurementWe explored different types of measuring tools and guessed how to use them, what we would use them for, and how they compare to customary units. Please continue this learning at home (the kitchen is a great place to start!) Author VisitUnit of InquiryThe transdisciplinary theme for this Unit of Inquiry is "How we Organize Ourselves." The central idea is "Knowledge of the past can be used to organize and make decisions about the present and future." We try and connect as many of our standards as possible to this overarching, worldwide theme.
Genius Hour SpeakersThis unit, our Genius Hour will consist of creating inventions in order to solve problems. Along with our Unit of Inquiry, we will be creating ads and marketing campaigns to organize ourselves and our product in order to convince others to purchase an invention. If you have any experience with inventing, marketing, or selling things, we would love to have you come and speak during this time! We work on this project on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 - 1:00pm. Please email me if you are interested!
