August Birthday CelebrationThank you to the parents who helped make our August Birthday Celebration a success! The kids had a great time and the donuts were delicious! What we've been up to...Mid-Module AssessmentWe will take a mid-module assessment in math on Wednesday. You child should have a math study guide in their red folder tonight. This study guide goes over all topics on the assessment. Please make sure you review this with your child multiple times before Wednesday's test. Field Trip tomorrow! Please make sure that if your child did not sign up for a sack lunch, they bring their lunch. If you are unsure, pack a lunch just in case. I do not want a child to not have lunch during our field trip! I think that sunscreen and a water bottle would be great things to have during our day at the zoo. Box Tops for EducationI am so excited that F.AVE is participating in Box Tops for Education! This is an easy way for our school to get money that we can use however we want! Be sure to look for the pink tags on TONS of different grocery items. Each tag is work $0.10 and may items now have 2 Box Tops! This is headed up by our own Misty Wilson so please direct any questions to her ([email protected])..

Multiplying by 10This is a good example of all the very specific language we use in the classroom RoundingRounding using the vertical number line Rounding without using the vertical number line I will try and post some at the beginning of each math unit so they are relevant. We will begin addition either the end of this week or next week so I will be on the look out for some videos that explain the strategies we will be implementing in class!
I hope these help! PTO picnic tonight 5-8! There will be food trucks, dancing, and tons of fun. Hope you see you all there! Next week we will still be discussing ecosystems in preparation for our field trip to the zoo September 1st. If you have not yet turned in your permission slip, please do so as soon as possible! Discovery EducationThis website is where our science tech book is located. If you are ever interested in seeing the material we use in class, feel free to log on to discoveryeducation.com! There are also tons of resources and videos available for just about anything you child may be interested in. Below you will see a picture of students utilizing the interactive textbook. Please check it out! username: lunch#@csdecatur password: clark Adaptation ExperimentWe discovered part of the reason behind cats' great sense of smell. Wet noses!
MAP testing will begin for our class this Friday (August 21) and go through Tuesday (August 25). This is a test to assess each child's current levels. This test should not be stressful and we are not looking to complete any practice before this initial test. At this time in the year, we want to know where each child is at academically so we can meet specific needs.
Our testing time is 7:55am. Please make sure your child is here on time each day. We will be heading to testing first thing. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. There are some important dates to remember:
August 17: Girls on the Run registration opens online. August 21: PTO F.AVE Picnic September 1: Zoo field trip. We do not have enough room for everyone to ride with us to the zoo. If you would like to meet us there, you may. I am looking for parents to lead small groups around to complete an assignment during this trip. Please email me ([email protected]) if you are interested in hosting a small group during this particular field trip. September 4: Our school will have an author visit from Jacqueline Kelly. Unfortunately, we do not have the space to invite parents to come and see her speak. However, in the Monday folder you will see an order form to pre-order Jacqueline Kelly's new book The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate. After the assembly, students will have the opportunity to get their book signed. Last week we did a lot of practicing center rotation routines and procedures! We've almost made it to Friday! This week has been all about learning our schedule and getting ourselves back in the school mindset.
I know that the way math has been taught has been such a struggle. One of the major focuses involves re-naming numbers in different ways. So instead of saying 4 hundreds, we could say 40 tens. Both of these have the same value, but it takes a very deep number sense to understand this immediately. The program we use to teach math is brand new to these 4th graders, so please just hold tight. I promise it gets better! As far as homework goes, I never want this to be a frustration. I do not send home tons and tons of homework so I take what I do send home very seriously. If I send something home, it is because we have done something almost identical in class. However, if you child is really struggling, write me a little note and let them stop. I do not want bad feelings to be associated with a particular subject due to challenging homework. Check out what we have been up to! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a Terrific Tuesday! If you have not yet turned in your iPad form, please do so as soon as possible. We can't use iPads until all forms are turned in! Here's a sneak peak into what we've done this week: We are in need...Our classroom seems to be one without any child scissors! If you could bring one pair (or two) of child, safety scissors, that would be wonderful. My (incorrect) assumption was that there were some in the classroom... oops!
Thank you so much for such a wonderful first week of school! It was incredibly exciting and packed full of making new friends and learning new routines. The focus of this week was learning the traits of the learner profile. We discussed each one using authentic literature and at the end of the week, the students worked in groups to come up with examples of each one and created a poster to hang in our classroom. (Ask you child if they can identify each one!) Here are some highlights from our week! What to expect:Next week we will begin our regular schedule. Monday communication folders will come home Monday afternoon in the red folder. Inside will be lots of papers, but perhaps most importantly (to the kids anyway) there will be an iPad release forms. We cannot use iPads until all release forms have been returned. Please make sure to send them back Tuesday morning!
Our first Unit of Inquiry (binding theme for the next 5 weeks) is Sharing the Planet. We will attempt to tie all subject areas back to this central idea. Below is a synopsis of subject area learning for next week: Math: We will be visiting place value in depth and discussing the concept of each place value being 10x the place value to its right. Reading: We are still working on building our reading community through daily read alouds and class discussion. Independent reading time will be implemented daily in order to meet one-on-one with students so I can discover who each child is as a reader. Writing: We will be working on writing about reading, composing complete sentences, and focusing our paragraph around a main idea. Science: Our first unit is regarding ecosystems. We will be discussing ecosystems and determining how living things survive using the resources around them Social Studies: Connecting with our unit of inquiry, we will be discussing Native Americans and how they survived using their available natural resources. As always, do not hesitate to contact me with individual questions or concerns. Thank you so much for a fabulous week, I am looking forward to a wonderful year! |
