Volunteers Needed for ExplorationsVolunteers Needed At Fifth Avenue, we want to offer an outlet for students to explore their interests that may lead to a college or career choice. We want to foster curiosity and expand children's experiences in a variety of disciplines and skills. We also want to provide enriching opportunities for them to develop and strengthen the IB transdisciplinary skills: research, social, thinking, communication and self-management. When College and career explorations will occur on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 1:00 PM -2:30 PM. How F.AVE community (staff, parents, businesses, etc.) members will be asked to design an experience for a group of students that will support their development of an interest that may lead to a college and/or career choice. A minimum of 14 students per adult supervision will ensure that there is a balanced teacher/student ratio for all. Where Explorations can occur all around the school and the local community. This is a perfect opportunity to explore colleges and/or careers in our local community and right here in our school! Sign-up process Each staff member and interested parent and/or community member should sign up to either lead independently (minimum-14 students) or co-lead (minimum 24 students) an exploration. The sign-up should include a title and brief description of the exploration. In addition to this, adults must indicate the IB transdisciplinary skill(s) that will be focused on during this time. Any parent or community volunteers will have a F.AVE staff member assigned to their exploration as well. The purpose of having the staff member is to assist with the exploration and/or handle any emergencies that may arise during the time. Staff are familiar with the students and the process and procedures of the school. If you have already taught an exploration and would like to teach the same class, please go to the link and indicate that option on the form. Make sure to indicate whether or not this month's class is for a new group of students or a continuation with the same students. To sign up, click here! The deadline is midnight this Sunday, January 24, 2016. What's been going on...Math Resources If you look at the images above, there are a couple of students working with wooden blocks. These blocks are called cuisenaire rods and are very helpful when it comes to introducing fractions. You can purchase a set for one child on amazon fairly reasonably. They are excellent when modeling fractions because they are not labeled with the particular fraction. The student must figure out the fraction pieces on their own. Below is a Youtube Video with the beginning lessons regarding decomposing fractions. If you are interested, search "EngageNY grade 4 module 5" on Youtube and you can see the rest of lessons. If you have any problem finding them, feel free to contact me. I will post more later as we get to them! Lens Experiment We completed an experiment regarding light refraction, reflection, and concave and convex lenses. Ms. Holden (our instructional coach) came in and helped the students create a convex lens with water droplets over a newspaper (pictured above) in order to magnify the text. We discussed the difference between concave and convex lenses as well as where we would see these types of lenses in the real world. More pictures of the experiment on the the slideshow at the beginning of the blog post! A note from EIP's Ms. StewartHello Parents!
In order for you to be more informed on what your child is doing when receiving math and/or reading EIP services from me, I have started a blog. I will update this blog bi-monthly. The blog will inform you of the learning focus and standards we are concentrating on. If you ever have questions on what we are learning, please email me at [email protected]. The link to the blog is: http://stewarteip.blogspot.com/ or you can access it from the facutly/staff link on F.AVE's website. Just click on my picture and it will take you to the link. Thank you! Shannon Stewart (EIP teacher)
